Justice for Ahmaud

My heart goes out to Wanda Cooper-Jones and Marcus Arbery, Sr who never gave up in their fight for justice. Today’s guilty verdicts were as Mr. Arbery said, “a long time coming.” I will continue to pray for Ahmaud’s family and hope that they can find peace in the midst of this terrible storm.

Ahmaud’s tragic case exposed for some and reminded others that whether we live in Georgia or neighboring South Carolina…racism still permeates our society. And while hate like this runs rampant, my sons, your daughters, and all of us who are targeted simply because of the color of our skin, will never be safe or free, especially in states like SC where there still is no law against Hate Crimes. Meanwhile, our Governor and lawmakers fan the flames with Citizen’s Arrest and Open Carry Laws.

So thankful that “justice delayed” wasn’t “justice denied” in this case, but ever mindful that for too many, it is. We know from the recent Kyle Rittenhouse verdict that our criminal justice system is beyond broken. That’s why I’m committed to systemic reforms that will give all of us…irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or political party affiliation …a fighting chance.

Together, I believe we can build a safer, more equitable and inclusive society in our lifetimes. So today, let’s hold Ahmaud’s family and community in our hearts and keep working toward a better, brighter future…where there truly is “liberty and justice for ALL.”
