Senator Mia McLeod Releases Statement on Gun Violence
Columbia, SC- Senator Mia McLeod, Democratic Candidate for Governor released the following statement:
It is so ironic that the Governor now wants stiffer penalties for those who illegally possess a firearm, but is fine with 8 SCGOP senators blocking a debate on the Rep. Gilliard’s hate crimes bill which would also enhance penalties for those who commit hate crimes–since the majority of those crimes are perpetrated with guns, as was the case with Dylann Roof in 2015.
It is not surprising that he agrees with Sen. Harpootlian, since they also agreed that death by firing squad was a good idea for South Carolina.
The Governor’s latest efforts to pander with this lackadaisical, reactive “support” comes only after upstate constituents saw a rise in gun violence and expressed their concerns.
Meanwhile, he pushed for and celebrated the passage of open carry when we know that it makes it virtually impossible for law enforcement to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys and will lead to an increase in law enforcement officer and civilian injuries and deaths.
Gun violence is out of control in our state because the Governor and SCGOP legislators have refused to prioritize or pass any common sense gun reforms, including the following bills (which I’ve introduced and/or cosponsored in the SC House & Senate):
- Gun sellers cannot sell firearms until the background check clears.
- People who have been adjudicated mentally ill or mentally incompetent cannot purchase a firearm.
- Legal Gun owners must carry liability insurance. (Sponsored in SC Senate- 2022)
