Columbia, SC- Senator Mia McLeod, candidate for Governor, gave the following statement on redistricting:

Elections have consequences.

In fact, we’re already feeling the brunt of SCGOP gerrymandered state and congressional maps from 2011. Yesterday, South Carolinians had the opportunity to voice their questions and concerns about recently-proposed congressional maps. Thankfully many took advantage of that opportunity.

I’ve always pushed for an independent redistricting commission or process because I believe that’s the best way to ensure fair, equitable representation for all South Carolinians.

Truth is, no matter what side of the aisle we’re on, lawmakers should not be choosing our voters. Our voters should choose us. Until that happens, we’ll continue to ask the people of South Carolina to weigh in and urge redistricting committee members on both sides of the aisle to work together to draw fair congressional maps for our congressional districts that are truly in the best interest of all South Carolinians.”
